Study Links Plant-Based Ultraprocessed Foods to Increased Risk of Heart Disease and Early Death
Recent research has shed light on the potential dangers of consuming plant-based ultraprocessed foods, linking them to an increased risk of heart disease and early death. The study, conducted by researchers at the University of São Paulo, found that these foods, despite being plant-based, can have detrimental effects on health.
Registered dietitian Duane Mellor warns that not all plant-based foods are healthy, as many processed options like biscuits, crisps, confectionary, and soft drinks, although plant-based, do not contribute positively to a balanced diet. These ultraprocessed choices can significantly elevate bad cholesterol levels and blood pressure, ultimately leading to cardiovascular issues and premature death.
The study emphasizes that the level of processing plays a crucial role in determining the health impact of plant-based products. Senior author Renata Levy highlights that while plant-based diets can offer health benefits, the excessive processing of these foods can pose serious risks to individuals.
