Scott Stuber teams up with Gotham Group to create film about Bruce Springsteen’s ‘Nebraska’ album
Scott Stuber, in his first major film project since leaving as Netflix Film boss, has teamed up with Gotham Group’s Ellen Goldsmith-Vein & Eric Robinson to create a film about The Boss. The narrative feature, titled ‘Deliver Me from Nowhere,’ will focus on Bruce Springsteen and the prolonged effort to create his seminal 1982 album ‘Nebraska.’ This project is an adaptation of the Warren Zanes book published last year.
Jeremy Allen White, known for his role in ‘The Bear,’ is the top choice to portray Springsteen. Talks are underway with A24 to produce the movie. Negotiations are expected to commence after the Emmy winner completes Season 4 of ‘The Bear’ in June, with filming scheduled to take place in New Jersey in the fall.
Springsteen’s huge stardom and status as the premier lyricist and melody maker over decades is juxtaposed with the personal circumstances of his upbringing. His father’s battle with depression, a struggle that Springsteen himself has faced, had a profound impact on the creation of ‘Nebraska,’ widely regarded as his rawest and best album. The songs were recorded on a simple four-track recorder in a bedroom in Colts Neck, NJ, as Springsteen grappled with the effects of his rising fame and personal turmoil.
Inspired by the Terrence Malick film ‘Badlands,’ Springsteen addressed it directly in the song ‘Nebraska’ and other tracks, including ‘Atlantic City,’ ‘Highway Patrolman,’ and ‘State Trooper.’ Each song is considered a classic. ‘Nebraska’ followed the success of Springsteen’s albums ‘Born To Run,’ ‘Darkness on the Edge of Town,’ and ‘The River,’ preceding the release of ‘Born in the USA.’
Scott Cooper, known for his work on ‘Crazy Heart,’ has transitioned from actor to writer-director. ‘Crazy Heart’ won Oscars for its star Jeff Bridges, as well as T Bone Burnett and Ryan Bingham for their original song ‘The Weary Kind.’ Cooper’s latest project, ‘Deliver Me from Nowhere,’ is set to delve into the creative process behind Springsteen’s iconic album, shedding light on the personal struggles that influenced its creation.
