Rising Egg Prices and the Impact of Avian Influenza

The cost of eggs has doubled since 2020, and farmers and experts weigh in on the reasons behind this surge. The demand for eggs typically increases around Easter, contributing to the rise in cost. However, factors such as inflation and the impact of avian influenza on hen populations have also played a significant role.

Gary Joiner from the Texas Farm Bureau explains that avian influenza, a contagious disease affecting wild and domestic birds, has led to a reduction in the number of hens producing eggs. This has resulted in a decrease in the supply of eggs, driving up their average cost. In 2020, a dozen eggs were priced at around $1.50, but by 2023, the average cost had risen to $4.20. Currently, the average cost of a dozen eggs stands at $3.

Joiner emphasizes that poultry operations in the country are vulnerable to avian influenza outbreaks, often necessitating the depopulation of affected flocks. This has further constrained the supply of eggs available in the market.

While avian influenza, commonly known as bird flu, is not contagious to humans and human infections are rare, its impact on poultry operations has been substantial. The surge in demand has also affected farmers in central Texas, as the escalating price of animal feed has added to their production costs.

Owners of the Firenze Family Farm and Hatchery in West, Jennifer and AJ Firenze, have had to raise their egg prices from $3 to $4 per dozen in response to the increased cost of animal feed. Despite the challenges, they remain committed to meeting their customers’ needs and endeavor to keep costs as low as possible.

AJ Firenze stresses that their primary motivation is not profit, but rather their passion for animals and their dedication to serving the community. Joiner suggests that consumers concerned about egg prices and quality should consider purchasing directly from local farmers in their area, where they may find more competitive prices.
