NC State Basketball: A Look Ahead to 2024

As the new year begins, the NC State Wolfpack basketball team is gearing up for a challenging journey ahead. With non-conference play in the rearview mirror, the team faces the daunting task of securing a spot in the NCAA tournament through a demanding ACC schedule.

The Wolfpack’s non-conference performance, while commendable against teams like BYU and Tennessee, fell short of delivering the standout victories needed to bolster their tournament resume. As the ACC appears to be lacking in powerhouse teams this season, the opportunities for signature wins may be scarce.

According to KenPom’s projections, NC State is anticipated to finish with a 10-10 record in conference play. While this would constitute a respectable performance, it may not be sufficient to secure an at-large NCAA bid. Last year, the team required 12 wins in addition to a triumph in the ACC tournament to secure a spot in the NCAA field. It is likely that a similar feat will be necessary this year, making each victory crucial.

With only four ACC teams currently ranked in the NET top 50, and just two home games qualifying as Q1 contests, NC State faces considerable pressure to capitalize on limited opportunities. The upcoming matchup against Notre Dame poses a significant challenge, as the Wolfpack navigates a series of road games against lower-ranked ACC opponents.

Despite the formidable task ahead, there are reasons for optimism. NC State’s favorable road schedule, with no overwhelming underdog matchups aside from visits to UNC and Clemson, presents a chance to accumulate crucial wins. The team has already secured a notable road victory against BC, positioning them for further success on the road.

While the schedule aligns in favor of hosting key games in Raleigh, the scarcity of high-quality win opportunities remains a concern. The Wolfpack’s ability to navigate this challenging landscape will undoubtedly shape their postseason aspirations.
