Lions vs. 49ers: NFC Championship Game Preview

The Detroit Lions have advanced to a postseason level not seen in years, and aim for the franchise’s first Super Bowl appearance. Dan Campbell – in just his third season as head coach – has directed the Lions to their first NFC championship game appearance in 32 years. His team has won two postseason games en route to the conference title game, which triples the number of playoff victories for the Lions during the Super Bowl era.

The San Francisco 49ers are used to reaching this point in the playoffs. This is their third consecutive NFC championship game appearance and fourth in the last five seasons. Boasting a loaded roster with an NFL-high nine Pro Bowl selections, the 49ers are heavy favorites to return to the Super Bowl after a four-season absence.

The NFC championship game is set to kick off at 6:30 p.m. ET at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California. The game will be televised on FOX with Kevin Burkhardt and Greg Olsen providing the play-by-play and analysis, while Erin Andrews and Tom Rinaldi report from the sidelines. The game is also available to stream for free on Fubo.

According to AccuWeather, it is projected to be quite nice for the NFC championship game, with partly sunny skies and a high temperature of 74 degrees on Sunday in Santa Clara, California.

The top NFL betting apps favor the 49ers over the Lions in the NFC championship game. The 49ers are 7-point favorites over the Lions according to the BetMGM NFL odds. The over-under is 51, and the 49ers are a -350 favorite on the moneyline, while the Lions are a +275 underdog according to the BetMGM NFL odds.

USA TODAY Sports’ staff picks for the game: Lorenzo Reyes predicts the 49ers to win 29-24, highlighting the 49ers’ stronger roster, but noting that the Lions match up fairly well and excel at stopping the run, which could limit the effectiveness of Christian McCaffrey.
