A former Indianapolis TV anchor, Tanya Sumner, known as Tanya Spencer during her on-air career, passed away at the age of 53 after battling a rare form of colon cancer. Sumner, who had been diagnosed with the aggressive cancer in 2022, shared a poignant final message emphasizing the value of time and good health.

Sumner, who had worked at the Indianapolis ABC affiliate WRTV for 10 years of her 20-year broadcasting career before transitioning into local politics, was remembered as a beloved figure in Indiana. Following her departure from journalism, she served as a councilwoman in District Three on the Whitestown Town Council.

Whitestown Town Manager Katie Barr expressed the community’s deep loss, highlighting Sumner’s dedication and love for her town, family, and colleagues. Sumner’s impact was felt not only in her professional roles but also in her advocacy for health awareness.
