Experts have advised men to be sexually active in order to prevent prostate cancer. The recommendation was made by medical practitioners in Lagos, who suggested that a balanced diet and regular sexual activity could lower the risk of developing prostate cancer.
Dr. Caleb Yakubu, the Coordinator of One-Stop-Breast Cancer Clinic at Lagos University Teaching Hospital, emphasized the importance of regular sexual activity in reducing the likelihood of prostate cancer. He explained that frequent ejaculation can prevent stagnancy or reduction in the flow of prostate fluid, which could otherwise increase the risk of cancer.
Dr. Yakubu cited a study from the U.S. indicating that men who ejaculate up to 20 times per month have a significantly reduced risk of prostate cancer. He also stressed the importance of early detection, recommending that men above 40 should undergo Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA) tests regularly to monitor their health status.
Additionally, Dr. Muyosore Makinde, a Consultant Family and Lifestyle Medicine Physician at Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, highlighted the critical role of diet and lifestyle in cancer prevention and management. She urged Nigerians, especially men, to adopt healthy eating habits and reduce consumption of refined diets, carbohydrates, and sugar. Instead, she recommended a diet high in fibre, protein, and vegetables to lower the risk of prostate cancer.
Dr. Makinde expressed concern over the reckless eating habits of many Nigerians, emphasizing the need to prioritize nutritional needs over personal wants. She emphasized the importance of cultivating healthy eating habits to prevent the onset of cancer.
