A recent shift in the aging process of Elijah Craig Barrel Proof Bourbon has caused a stir among American whiskey enthusiasts. The beloved brand, known for its 12-year age statement, has introduced a younger batch, stirring concerns among connoisseurs. The latest release, Elijah Craig Barrel Proof Bourbon Batch A124, aged at 10 years and 9 months and with a 59.5% ABV, has sparked debates about the brand’s future direction.
Despite the changes, the bourbon maintains its signature mashbill of 78% corn, 12% malted barley, and 10% rye, and is still aged in Char No. 3 new oak barrels, remaining non-chill filtered. Tasting notes reveal a profile of candy-sweet fruit transitioning into caramel, cinnamon, brown sugar, and a hint of chocolate, offering a satisfyingly full palate experience. Moreover, the lower proof has made it more versatile for cocktail enthusiasts, with the bourbon excelling in high-octane concoctions like the Manhattan.
