The popular discount store, Family Dollar, is set to permanently close six of its locations in Philadelphia by the end of next month. The closures come after the company’s announcement to shut over 1,000 stores due to a decrease in sales.
The Department of Labor and Industry has reported that a total of 62 employees will be affected by the layoffs in the Philadelphia stores. The closures are scheduled to take effect on April 20, 2024.
The six Family Dollar stores in Philadelphia that are set to close are located at 1325 Point Breeze Avenue, 4701 West Girard Avenue, 1925 West Allegheny Avenue, 1955 West Hunting Park Avenue, 2201 West Cambria Street, and 2459 Kensington Avenue.
This decision follows the Dollar Tree company’s announcement of closing about 600 Family Dollar stores across the United States this year, along with an additional 370 stores over the next several years. The company also plans to permanently close 30 Dollar Tree stores in the coming years.
Despite a slight increase in foot traffic, Family Dollar experienced a 1.2% decrease in sales in stores open for at least a year, prompting the decision to shut down several stores.
With the closures set to impact over 60 workers in Philadelphia, the move is part of the company’s downsizing efforts in response to its fourth quarter fiscal reports showing a decline in sales.
