Xtrac’s Andrew McDougall Wins 2024 Louis Schwitzer Award for Innovative Electric Servo Actuator

The NTT INDYCAR SERIES is currently in action with the live leaderboard showcasing the latest updates. Xtrac’s Andrew McDougall has been honored as the recipient of the 2024 Louis Schwitzer Award for his innovative Xtrac Electric Servo Actuator, a system now utilized by the NTT INDYCAR SERIES.

McDougall was presented with a $10,000 prize at the ceremony held at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway by the Indiana Section of the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) International and award sponsors Cummins and Valvoline Global. The Xtrac Electric Servo Actuator (ESA) revolutionizes gear change systems for sequential shift transmissions, offering benefits such as faster shifts, reduced weight, fewer components, and enhanced efficiency. The direct actuation feature of ESA ensures improved accuracy and repeatability while minimizing the electrical load on the race car.

The Louis Schwitzer Award, named after the renowned engineer and race car driver Louis Schwitzer, is a prestigious accolade within the automotive engineering sector. It acknowledges groundbreaking innovations that advance automotive technology boundaries, align with NTT INDYCAR SERIES specifications, and are linked to the vehicle’s engine, powertrain, profile, chassis, or safety.

Roger England, the head of R&D at Valvoline Global Operations, highlighted the collaborative efforts with Cummins, stating, “The Louis Schwitzer Award reflects the innovative drive within the automotive industry. Valvoline Global and Cummins are privileged to recognize the exceptional contributions of these innovators reshaping transportation and inspiring future engineers.” Aaron Quinton, the Cummins Engine Business Unit Product Line architect, expressed the significance of co-sponsoring the LSA with Valvoline, marking a valuable celebration of the enduring partnership between Cummins and Valvoline.
