Wren High School’s Girls’ Basketball Team Prepares for Rematch in State Championship

Wren High School’s girls’ basketball team is gearing up for a rematch with Camden in the state championship after securing a victory in the 3A Girls Upper State high school basketball championship against Daniel. The Hurricanes, with a record of 28-2, are set to face off against Camden, led by star player Joyce Edwards, who has committed to top-ranked South Carolina.

Last season, Wren’s dreams of a title were dashed by Camden, but this year, they are feeling more prepared. Coach Pam McGowens believes that the team is more physically capable and better equipped to protect the rim, giving them an advantage in the upcoming rematch.

Edwards, a five-star talent, poses a significant threat to Wren with her impressive stats, averaging 31.3 points, 12.9 rebounds, 4.5 steals, 3.9 assists, and 3.1 blocks per game. McGowens acknowledges the need for a strategic plan to contain Edwards and minimize the impact of the other players on Camden’s team.

Wren’s defense will heavily rely on senior center Olivia Randolph and senior forward Deyana Hayes to counter Edwards’ dominance inside the paint. The team is determined to put up a strong defense and is focused on securing a victory in the upcoming championship game.

Despite their dominant performance throughout the season, Wren faced a tough challenge in the Upper State final against Daniel. The Hurricanes, who have been outscoring opponents by an average of over 30.2 points per game, found themselves in a close match, with Daniel trailing by only two points at halftime. However, Wren managed to pull away in the third quarter and secure their spot in the state championship game.

McGowens expressed that the tough game against Daniel may have actually benefited the team, providing them with valuable experience and helping them overcome any lingering anxiety. With the rematch against Camden on the horizon, Wren is focused on fine-tuning their strategy and maintaining their composure as they aim for victory in the state championship.
