A dedicated resident from Woodend is set to embark on a remarkable journey this month, walking a total of 100 kilometers to support the global fight against polio. Grant Hocking, a member of the Woodend Rotary Club, is participating in the annual Rotary Walk With Us event, which encourages individuals to walk, run, or roll a designated distance throughout the month to raise funds for polio vaccination initiatives.
Hocking’s ambitious goal is to raise $1,000 by the end of October, a task he is passionate about due to the ongoing presence of polio in certain parts of the world. “The reason we chose to focus on polio is that it still exists, and many people are unaware that we have had a vaccine for over 50 to 60 years. However, there are still areas where wild polio remains endemic,” Hocking explained.
Since its inception in 2020, the Walk With Us challenge has evolved from a larger group walk on World Polio Day, which is celebrated on October 24. The initiative was born out of necessity when COVID-19 restrictions made large gatherings impossible. Hocking noted that the initiative not only serves as a fundraiser for a critical cause but also promotes mental and physical health benefits for participants.
Over the past four years, the Walk With Us campaign has successfully raised approximately $400,000, demonstrating the commitment of the Rotary community to eradicate polio. Each year, Rotary International sets a fundraising goal of $50 million to combat the disease, with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation matching every dollar raised by Rotary with an additional two dollars.
Hocking encourages those interested in supporting his mission to visit his fundraising page for the Rotary Walk With Us initiative, where donations can be made to contribute to this vital cause. By participating in this event, individuals not only help in the fight against polio but also foster a sense of community and collective action towards a healthier world.
The impact of polio, a highly infectious viral disease that primarily affects children under five, continues to be felt in various regions. The efforts to eradicate polio are critical, as the disease can lead to paralysis and even death. Hocking’s dedication to this cause highlights the important role that local communities play in global health initiatives.
As the month progresses, Hocking and other participants will be logging their kilometers, sharing their experiences, and raising awareness about the importance of vaccination in preventing polio outbreaks. The Rotary Walk With Us event serves as a reminder of the power of grassroots movements in making a significant impact on global health issues.
With the continued support of individuals and organizations, the dream of a polio-free world is within reach. Hocking’s efforts exemplify the spirit of community service and the commitment to making a difference, one step at a time.
