WNBA Stars Fight to Remove Kelly Loeffler in ‘Power of the Dream’ Documentary

WNBA stars are set to reveal their powerful fight to remove former team owner Kelly Loeffler in a new documentary titled ‘Power of the Dream’. The documentary, produced by Dawn Porter, Tracee Ellis Ross, Sue Bird, and Nneka Ogwumike, sheds light on how WNBA players united against Loeffler during the Black Lives Matter movement in 2020.

The conflict arose when the WNBA announced its support for the Black Lives Matter movement by permitting players to wear warm-up uniforms featuring slogans like ‘Say Her Name’ in honor of Breonna Taylor. Loeffler, a Republican former U.S. Senator, opposed the league’s decision, stating that sports should steer clear of politics.

In the trailer, former Dream player Elizabeth Williams expresses disappointment in Loeffler’s stance, highlighting the significance of her ownership role in a team predominantly comprising Black women. The documentary captures the players’ resolve for ‘action-based’ solutions amidst the turmoil.

Layshia Clarendon, a vocal critic of Loeffler’s ownership, and her teammates delved into supporting Senator Raphael Warnock, who was running against Loeffler in Georgia. Warnock, featured in the documentary, acknowledges the players’ dedication to the cause, emphasizing that the movement transcends basketball.

As the players don ‘Vote Warnock’ shirts during the 2020 season, the documentary showcases their unwavering commitment to effecting change. Eventually, Loeffler was ousted from the team’s ownership, paving the way for former Dream player Renee Montgomery to join a new investor group taking over the team.

The documentary ‘Power of the Dream’ promises an insightful look into the WNBA players’ fight for social justice and their successful campaign to remove Kelly Loeffler from the Atlanta Dream’s ownership.
