Publisher Wizards of the Coast is set to launch a new entry-level set for Magic: The Gathering, called Foundations, aimed at providing a tailored experience for beginners in the popular trading card game. The new set is scheduled for release on Nov. 15 and is expected to redefine the baseline experience for new players until at least 2029.
Foundations will introduce a range of products, including Play boosters, Collector boosters, Jumpstart boosters, and Bundles, alongside two innovative additions – a Beginner Box and a Starter Collection. The Beginner Box will contain 10 packets, each with 20 cards representing Magic’s five colors of mana. Players will have the flexibility to mix and match these packets to create various deck combinations, with some packets pre-shuffled to facilitate immediate gameplay.
Bryan Hawley, Wizards’ game design director, emphasized the focus on providing a comprehensive onboarding experience for new players with Foundations. The Beginner Box is designed to guide players from initial curiosity about Magic to a deeper understanding and enjoyment of the game, offering a wealth of content and opportunities to play straight out of the box.
With Foundations, Wizards of the Coast aims to return Magic: The Gathering to its fundamental roots, catering to both new players and longtime fans. The set’s release is anticipated to bring a fresh perspective to the game, aligning with the company’s strategy of diversifying its product offerings to engage a broader audience.
