Wegmans to Open First Charlotte Location in 2026

Wegmans Food Markets, a popular New York-based grocery chain, is set to make its debut in Charlotte with the opening of its first location in Ballantyne in 2026. This long-awaited expansion is a significant development for Charlotte’s grocery market, as Wegmans is known for its high-quality products and unique shopping experience.

The new Wegmans store in Charlotte will span approximately 110,000 square feet, offering a wide range of offerings, including expansive produce, meat, seafood, and cheese sections. Additionally, customers can look forward to a market café with both indoor and outdoor seating, adding a social and culinary element to the shopping experience.

One of the distinctive features of Wegmans stores is the inclusion of an overhead circulating mechanical train and a rooster that crows on the hour, adding a touch of whimsy to the shopping environment. The store will also feature a 600-plus-space parking lot, ensuring convenient access for customers.

According to Hallie Johnston, N.C. district manager, the new Wegmans location will be situated on North Community House Road, located on the east side of Ballantyne, just a half mile from The Bowl at Ballantyne. This strategic positioning aims to cater to the needs of local residents and enhance accessibility for shoppers.

The decision to bring Wegmans to Charlotte was made possible by the establishment of a large distribution center outside Richmond in 2023. This facility has empowered the brand to expand its reach into the southern region, enabling the fulfillment of the growing demand for Wegmans’ offerings in Charlotte.

Speaking about the expansion, Dan Aken, VP of real estate and store planning at Wegmans, highlighted the company’s commitment to meeting the requests of North Carolinians. The decision to open a store in Charlotte was driven by the overwhelming demand expressed by local residents, further underscoring the brand’s dedication to providing a superior shopping experience to its customers.

Wegmans’ impending arrival in Charlotte has generated significant anticipation within the community, following the successful openings of stores in other North Carolina locations, including Raleigh, Chapel Hill, Morrisville, and Wake Forest. The brand’s expansion into Charlotte is a testament to its continued growth and commitment to meeting the evolving needs of consumers.

As Charlotte eagerly awaits the arrival of Wegmans in 2026, the introduction of this renowned grocery chain is poised to bring a new dimension to the city’s retail landscape, offering residents a diverse and elevated shopping experience.
