Golden State Warriors’ forward Andrew Wiggins will be sitting out the game against the Atlanta Hawks due to an ankle injury sustained in the second quarter, as reported by ESPN’s Kendra Andrews.
Wiggins, who had contributed two points and four rebounds in 19 minutes before the injury, will not be returning to the court for the remainder of the game. The Warriors are aiming to secure their third consecutive win against the Hawks, who currently maintain a narrow lead early in the fourth quarter.
This season, Wiggins has been averaging a career-low of 12.7 points and 4.2 rebounds per game, while playing an average of 27.2 minutes per game. His scoring has declined from last year’s 17.1 points per game, and there has been a drop in both his field goal and three-point percentages this season. Although Wiggins has been a recent starter for the Warriors, he has been in and out of the starting lineup this year, coming off the bench in 11 games.
Despite his reduced production this year, Wiggins continues to bring value to Golden State’s lineup as a two-way player, and the team is hopeful that the injury is not severe. The Warriors have grappled with several injuries this season, with Chris Paul and Gary Payton II also missing extended playing time. It now appears that Wiggins may also be facing a period on the sidelines.
While the Warriors have secured consecutive victories, they have encountered difficulties this season, currently holding a 21-24 record and occupying the 12th position in the Western Conference. The team’s star player, Steph Curry, has been performing exceptionally, averaging 27.4 points per game, yet this has not been adequate to elevate the team’s overall performance.
With the trade deadline looming, the Warriors may consider making strategic moves to reposition themselves in the playoff contention.
