Walmart to Close Two San Diego County Stores

Walmart, the largest retailer in the world, has announced the closure of two of its stores in San Diego County. Despite its impressive sales figures, the Bentonville, Arkansas-based company has decided not to renew leases at the Walmarts on Fletcher Parkway in El Cajon and on Imperial Avenue in the Sherman Heights neighborhood of San Diego. Both stores are set to close on Feb. 9.

With nearly 5,000 stores throughout the United States, Walmart’s decision to close two locations in San Diego will leave the county with two dozen others of various sizes, including at two other locations in El Cajon and five others in San Diego. The company cited underperformance as the reason for the closures, emphasizing that while its overall business remains strong, the specific stores being shut down have not met expectations.

However, Walmart has assured that employees of the closing stores will be eligible for employment at other Walmart-owned locations. In a news release, Walmart spokesman Brian K. Little expressed gratitude to the customers and highlighted the company’s commitment to continue serving them through its remaining locations, online platform, and delivery services.

The closure of these stores will undoubtedly impact the local communities. The news will be a blow to shoppers at Parkway Plaza in El Cajon, where business has been a challenge, and the smaller neighborhood market on Imperial Avenue will be missed in the community despite its size.

This development marks a significant change in the retail landscape of San Diego County and raises questions about the economic impact on the affected neighborhoods. As the closures are set to take place on Feb. 9, the community and employees will be closely watching for updates and potential opportunities for relocation within the Walmart network.
