The Food and Drug Administration has issued a recall of cucumbers that were widely available in Illinois in May after some samples tested positive for Salmonella.

The recall specifically involves cucumbers distributed by Fresh Start Produce Sales in Illinois and 13 other states between May 17 and May 21. A sample from these cucumbers showed contamination with Salmonella. It is important to note that these cucumbers were distributed in bulk cartons in Illinois and may have been sold without the original packaging.

Salmonella is a bacterium that can lead to symptoms such as diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps in healthy individuals. However, it can have severe consequences for young children, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems. In some cases, even healthy individuals may require hospitalization due to Salmonella infection.

In a previous outbreak related to cucumbers, one death and numerous illnesses were reported. As of now, there have been no confirmed deaths or illnesses associated with the current cucumber recall in Illinois. It is essential to stay informed about food recalls and take necessary precautions to ensure food safety.
