Attaining a healthy gut microbiome has become a popular trend in the wellness world, with many people, including TikTokers, becoming obsessed. But what does it actually mean? According to Megan Rossi, a Ph.D. and registered dietitian, the gut microbiome refers to the trillions of microorganisms living in our gut, along with the chemicals they produce. This collection of the environment and microbes is mostly located in the lower section of our gastrointestinal tracts, which can have significant benefits for our overall health, including mental health.
Rossi emphasizes that the key to improving gut health is to include as many plants as possible in our diet, ideally consuming 30 different kinds per week. Contrary to popular belief, focusing on adding diverse types of plants is more beneficial for gut health than fixating on eliminating so-called ‘bad’ foods. She specifically identifies six accessible groups as ‘the super six’: whole grains (e.g. quinoa, oats), nuts and seeds, vegetables, fruits, legumes, and herbs and spices. Each category provides the gut microbiome with different nutrients, thereby promoting a diverse and healthy gut environment.
With over 50 international peer-reviewed scientific papers authored by Rossi, it is evident that consuming a variety of plants is crucial for gut health. Embracing the ‘super six’ can be a simple yet effective approach to nurturing a healthy gut microbiome, without the need to forage for obscure foods. By diversifying plant intake, individuals can provide their gut microbiome with the essential nutrients it needs to thrive.
