Sun protection is a crucial aspect of maintaining healthy skin, regardless of age or weather conditions. UCI Health dermatologist Dr. Melissa Shive emphasizes the importance of applying sunscreen daily as a preventive measure against skin cancer.

Despite misconceptions perpetuated on social media, Dr. Shive stresses the scientific evidence supporting the benefits of sunscreen. Many individuals, particularly young adults, fall prey to myths surrounding sun protection due to a lack of awareness regarding sun damage and its prevention.

A recent study by the American Academy of Dermatology revealed alarming statistics, with a significant percentage of individuals neglecting the correlation between suntans and skin cancer. Millennials, in particular, exhibit a concerning lack of knowledge about the dangers of tanning.

The harmful effects of ultraviolet light exposure are well-documented, with skin cancer being the most common form of cancer in the United States. Dr. Shive underscores the importance of adopting sun safety practices early on to mitigate the risk of developing skin cancer.

To safeguard against sun damage, Dr. Shive recommends the regular application of a broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30. This should be applied generously before heading outdoors and reapplied every two hours or more frequently during sweating or swimming.

Furthermore, sun protection is essential even on cloudy days, as UV rays can penetrate cloud cover. Mineral-based sunscreens containing zinc oxide or titanium oxide offer superior protection and are less likely to cause skin irritation.

Dr. Shive advises seeking shade, especially during peak sun hours between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., and wearing protective clothing such as long sleeves, pants, and a wide-brimmed hat. Clothing with a UPF rating provides an additional layer of defense against harmful UV radiation.

It is crucial to protect your eyes from sun exposure to prevent ocular melanoma, eyelid cancers, and corneal inflammation. By following these sun safety tips and integrating them into your daily routine, you can reduce the risk of skin damage and promote long-term skin health.
