The Importance of Oral Health Care: Insights from Dental Implant Surgeon Dr. Naftaly Macharia
The importance of oral health cannot be overstated, as it plays a significant role in one’s overall appearance and self-esteem. Dr. Naftaly Macharia, a dental implant surgeon, recently shared valuable insights on oral health care during an appearance on The Day Break on Citizen TV.
According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), oral health encompasses the state of the mouth, teeth, and orofacial structures that enable individuals to carry out essential functions such as eating, breathing, and speaking.
Dr. Macharia emphasized the importance of brushing teeth twice a day, specifically after meals. Contrary to popular belief, he debunked the myth that brushing before meals is more effective. He explained that brushing after meals, for at least 2 minutes each time, helps remove plaque that can lead to cavities and other oral health issues.
Addressing the common practice of brushing teeth before breakfast to eliminate bacteria from the previous night, Dr. Macharia highlighted the risks associated with this approach. Consuming sugary foods like bread for breakfast without brushing afterwards can lead to the presence of sugar in the mouth throughout the day, promoting bacterial growth. Therefore, he recommended eating first and then brushing to prevent the formation of harmful bacteria.
Dr. Macharia also shed light on ‘morning breath,’ attributing it to plaque buildup during periods of inactivity, such as sleeping. To combat this, he advised brushing teeth before bedtime to reduce plaque accumulation overnight.
Furthermore, Dr. Macharia provided guidance on proper brushing techniques, emphasizing the importance of selecting the right toothbrush and toothpaste. He suggested changing toothbrushes every 3 months and choosing bristles based on individual needs, such as soft bristles for gum disease, medium bristles for regular use, and hard bristles for individuals prone to teeth staining from smoking.
For optimal oral health, Dr. Macharia recommended brushing teeth effectively and using suitable oral care products tailored to individual requirements. By following these best practices, individuals can maintain good oral hygiene and reduce the risk of dental issues.
