The gut, also known as the gastrointestinal system, plays a vital role in maintaining our overall health. Resetting and improving gut health is essential for overall well-being. According to experts, the gut microbiome, which consists of a variety of microorganisms residing in the intestine, is crucial for our biological functions.
Professor Janes Walter from University College Cork’s APC Microbiome Ireland research center emphasizes the importance of maintaining a healthy microbiome. He suggests simple dietary changes to reset gut health. Walter advises incorporating a diverse range of foods, opting for whole grains instead of processed ones, increasing fiber intake, focusing on plant-based proteins, legumes, nuts, and including fatty fish like sardines, mackerel, and salmon in the diet. While lean red meat is acceptable in moderation, Walter cautions against saturated fats found in cheese, bacon, and biscuits as they can be harmful to the microbiome.
Moreover, Walter warns against consuming ultra-processed foods (UPF) due to their low fiber content, high salt levels, and ingredients that can negatively impact the microbiome. UPF consumption may lead to gut inflammation, degradation of the mucus layer, and increase the risk of non-communicable diseases such as type 2 diabetes and Crohn’s disease. He advises avoiding unfamiliar foods or consuming them sparingly, as they should not be staple items in the diet.
Ensuring a healthy gut is essential for overall well-being and can have a significant impact on our health. By making small changes in our diet and being mindful of the foods we consume, we can reset and improve our gut health, leading to a healthier and happier life.
