The Honeymooners Actress Joyce Randolph Dies at 99

Joyce Randolph, a veteran stage and television actor known for her role as Trixie Norton on The Honeymooners, has passed away at the age of 99. Her son, Randolph Charles, confirmed that she died of natural causes at her home on the Upper West Side of Manhattan.

As the last surviving main character of the beloved comedy from television’s golden age of the 1950s, Randolph’s role as Trixie provided the perfect foil to her dimwitted TV husband. The Honeymooners offered an affectionate portrayal of Brooklyn tenement life, with Jackie Gleason as the blustering bus driver Ralph Kramden, Audrey Meadows as his wisecracking wife Alice, and Art Carney as the cheerful sewer worker Ed Norton.

Randolph’s portrayal of Trixie, alongside Meadows’ character, often found themselves commiserating over their husbands’ various follies and mishaps, delivering memorable moments to the show’s audience.

Originally starting as a recurring skit on Gleason’s variety show, Cavalcade of Stars, The Honeymooners quickly became a favorite of television comedy, growing in popularity after Gleason switched networks with The Jackie Gleason Show. It later became a full-fledged series for one season in 1955-56, with its 39 episodes becoming a staple of syndicated programming aired all over the country and beyond.

In an interview with the New York Times in January 2007, Randolph revealed that she received no compensation in residuals for those 39 episodes initially. However, she later began receiving royalties with the discovery of “lost” episodes from the variety hours, highlighting the challenges faced by actors during the early days of television.

Joyce Randolph’s contribution to the television industry and her enduring role as Trixie Norton in The Honeymooners will be remembered by fans and colleagues alike, marking the end of an era in television’s history.
