The Heightened Risks of Respiratory Viruses for Individuals with Heart Conditions

As the cold and flu season continues, millions of Americans are grappling with symptoms such as fever and dehydration from the flu, Covid, and RSV. However, for individuals with heart conditions, the risks associated with these respiratory viruses are significantly heightened.

Dr. Icilma V. Fergus, a cardiologist at New York’s Mount Sinai Hospital, explains that when an individual contracts a virus, it can trigger an inflammatory response in the body. This activation of the immune system can lead to an increase in heart rate and blood pressure, placing additional strain on the heart. For those with existing risk factors for heart disease, such as high cholesterol and high blood pressure, viral-induced inflammation can potentially lead to heart failure or even a heart attack.

It is crucial for individuals with heart disease to be vigilant about any symptoms they experience during a viral infection. Warning signs such as extreme fatigue, rapid heart rate, dizziness, severe headache, chest pain, and shortness of breath should not be overlooked, as they may indicate a need for medical attention.

To mitigate the risk of illness, experts advise staying up to date with flu and Covid vaccinations and, if eligible, obtaining an RSV vaccine as well. By taking proactive measures, individuals can help safeguard their health and well-being during the ongoing cold and flu season.
