Tamron Launches Versatile 28-300mm Lens for Sony E-Mount Cameras

In a significant development for photography enthusiasts, Tamron has unveiled its latest innovation, the 28-300mm f/4-7.1 Di III VC VXD lens, designed specifically for full-frame Sony E-mount mirrorless cameras. This new all-in-one zoom lens, which boasts an impressive 10.7x zoom ratio, is expected to cater to a wide range of photographic needs while maintaining a compact and lightweight design.

Measuring just five inches (126 millimeters) at its minimum length and weighing a mere 21.5 ounces (610 grams), the Tamron 28-300mm lens is engineered to deliver exceptional versatility without the bulk often associated with high-zoom lenses. This lens arrives on the market shortly after the release of Tamron’s 50-300mm f/4.5-6.3 lens, further expanding the brand’s offerings for full-frame E-mount users.

One of the standout features of the Tamron 28-300mm f/4-7.1 lens is its advanced autofocus system. Equipped with the Voice-coil eXtreme-torque Drive (VXD) linear motor, this lens promises quick and accurate focusing. Additionally, it includes Vibration Compensation (VC) technology, which enhances optical image stabilization, ensuring that users can capture sharp images even in challenging conditions.

The lens also excels in close-up photography, allowing photographers to focus as close as 7.5 inches (0.19 meters) at 28mm, achieving a maximum magnification ratio of 1:2.8. At the telephoto end, the minimum focusing distance extends to 39 inches (0.99 meters), providing a magnification ratio of 1:3.8. This capability makes the lens suitable for a variety of photography styles, from landscapes to detailed portraits.

Constructed with 20 elements arranged in 13 groups, the lens incorporates a single eXtra Low Dispersion (XLD) element along with a Low Dispersion (LD) element. These components work together to minimize aberrations, particularly chromatic aberrations—those pesky color fringing issues that can detract from image quality. Furthermore, Tamron’s Broad-Band Anti-Reflection Generation 2 (BBAR-G2) coating has been applied to suppress ghosting and flare, ensuring that images remain clear and vibrant, even when shooting against bright light.

Tamron asserts that this lens offers “best-in-class image quality for an all-in-one zoom lens for full-frame mirrorless interchangeable lens cameras.” This claim positions the 28-300mm lens as a strong contender in the market, appealing to photographers who value both portability and performance.

The versatility of the Tamron 28-300mm lens extends beyond still photography; it is also designed with videographers in mind. The smooth and quiet autofocus system is particularly beneficial for video applications, allowing for seamless transitions without distracting noise.

Additional features of the lens include a zoom lock mechanism, a Focus Set button, and compatibility with Tamron’s Lens Utility Function software. This software enables users to customize their lens settings, enhancing the overall shooting experience. The lens also features a 67mm filter thread, which is consistent with many of Tamron’s other mirrorless camera lenses, providing ease of use for those who already own Tamron filters.

The introduction of the 28-300mm full-frame lens marks a significant milestone for Tamron, as it has been a decade since the company last offered a similar lens for DSLR cameras. Previously, Tamron produced the 28-300mm f/3.5-6.3 Di VC PZD for Canon EF, Nikon F, and Sony A mounts. This new lens demonstrates Tamron’s commitment to advancing lens technology for the modern mirrorless market.

Interestingly, the competition in the all-in-one lens segment is heating up. Nikon recently re-entered the market with its Nikkor Z 28-400mm f/4-8 VR lens, which, while slower than the older Nikon 28-300mm lens for F-mount, offers an extended focal range that may appeal to some photographers.

As the photography landscape continues to evolve, Tamron’s 28-300mm f/4-7.1 Di III VC VXD lens is poised to become a popular choice among photographers seeking a lightweight, versatile solution for their full-frame mirrorless camera systems. The combination of advanced optical technology, user-friendly features, and exceptional image quality makes this lens a noteworthy addition to any photographer’s kit.
