University of Michigan Launches Feasibility Study for Division I Women’s Hockey Program
The University of Michigan is considering establishing a Division I women’s hockey program, addressing the absence of such a program in the state. The feasibility study, supported by school President Santa Ono, aims to provide opportunities for young women to pursue the sport at a higher level without leaving Michigan. Denise Ilitch emphasized the need to address the talent drain from Michigan and highlighted the strong desire for a women’s varsity hockey program in the state. The move reflects the growing recognition of the importance of providing opportunities for women in sports, particularly in underrepresented areas such as women’s hockey.
