Tabernacle Choir’s Christmas Concert: A Celebration of Community and Talent

Performing with the renowned Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square is an experience that leaves a lasting impression. This sentiment was echoed by Lesley Nicol, widely recognized for her role as Mrs. Patmore in the acclaimed series ‘Downton Abbey,’ and Broadway star Michael Maliakel, who recently shared their experiences from the choir’s annual Christmas concert held in Salt Lake City.

The event, which took place over three nights at the expansive 21,000-seat Conference Center, showcased the talents of the Tabernacle Choir and Orchestra at Temple Square, and it is now set to reach an even broader audience through upcoming broadcasts on PBS and BYUtv.

Lesley Nicol faced an unexpected challenge just before her third and final performance as the concert’s narrator. She experienced a dental emergency, losing a significant part of her tooth. However, instead of panicking, Nicol found herself in a fortunate situation. Surrounded by a choir of over 300 members, she realized that many of them had full-time professions outside of music, including healthcare. Nicol humorously recounted, “Turns out if you’ve got a choir of 300-plus, there’s at least three dentists and an oral surgeon in there, so I had my pick.” Thanks to the quick assistance from her fellow performers, Nicol had her dental issue resolved promptly, which she described as “pretty impressive.”

This incident highlighted one of the many perks of performing with the Tabernacle Choir: the sense of community and support among its members. For Nicol and Maliakel, the experience transcended the stage, offering a glimpse into the camaraderie and dedication that defines the choir.

Reflecting on the concert, Maliakel emphasized the scale and grandeur of the event. He noted that the Christmas concert is one of the choir’s largest annual undertakings, and it provided a unique opportunity to collaborate with such a talented group of musicians. “The scale of the concert is unlike anything I’ve ever been a part of,” he remarked, indicating that the experience was both humbling and inspiring.

As the concert recordings prepare to air, Nicol and Maliakel are excited to share their performances with a wider audience. The PBS premiere is set for Tuesday night, followed by a Thursday evening showing on BYUtv. This broadcast will allow viewers to experience the festive spirit and musical excellence that the Tabernacle Choir is known for.

In addition to the concert’s musical highlights, both artists expressed gratitude for the opportunity to be part of a cherished holiday tradition. The Tabernacle Choir’s Christmas concert has become a beloved event for many, and Nicol and Maliakel were honored to contribute to its legacy.

As they look ahead to their future careers, both performers are eager to explore new projects and opportunities. Nicol, who has captivated audiences with her portrayal of Mrs. Patmore, continues to engage in various artistic endeavors, while Maliakel, known for his role in Broadway’s ‘Aladdin,’ is poised for further success in the theater world.

The Tabernacle Choir’s Christmas concert not only showcases exceptional talent but also fosters a sense of belonging and collaboration among artists from diverse backgrounds. As viewers prepare to tune in to the upcoming broadcasts, they can look forward to an evening filled with beautiful music, heartfelt performances, and the spirit of the holiday season.
