In a recent interview with 89 FM A Rádio Rock in São Paulo, Brazil, System of a Down drummer John Dolmayan and bassist Shavarsh ‘Shavo’ Odadjian discussed the possibility of the band releasing new music in the future. The band, fronted by Serj Tankian, has been on intermittent tours since returning from a hiatus in 2011, but has not yet recorded any new material since their albums “Mezmerize” and “Hypnotize,” which were both released in 2005.
Dolmayan expressed skepticism regarding the likelihood of a new System of a Down album in the near future, stating, “I wouldn’t count on a System of a Down album anytime soon. It’s very unlikely that it will happen, but if it does happen, it’ll be because it’s organic and the four of us just decide one day that, okay, we don’t care about what happened in the past. We don’t care if we had differences, either artistically or emotionally. We’re just gonna get together and do it, and it’ll be something that happens spontaneously.” He emphasized that trying to plan for a new album could create anxiety that might further splinter the band’s dynamics.
Shavo echoed Dolmayan’s sentiments, noting, “It’s been built up too much. The time that has passed is so long, so much that I feel like if it were to happen, like [John] said, it would have to happen without thinking: ‘Let’s do it.’ We go in, we don’t announce it, we don’t talk about it, we do it, and then you hear it without a big news about it. It’s the only way.” This insight into the band’s creative process illustrates their desire to keep things organic and spontaneous.
Dolmayan also mentioned that the band has some unreleased songs they worked on years ago, describing them as “incredible.” Shavo added, “We have it. No one else has it. It’s not recorded.” This revelation has sparked interest among fans, who are eager to hear what the band has been working on behind the scenes.
In September, Shavo further discussed the potential for new music during an interview with Chuck Armstrong of Loudwire Nights. He indicated his openness to collaboration, saying, “Listen, bro, my door is always open with that. I have a hundred riffs waiting, if they need anything from me. The way it would work was Daron [Malakian, System of a Down guitarist] would come in and he’d have complete songs, which I respect, man. The dude’s a sick-ass songwriter. And then Serj would have songs he’d bring in complete. It would just be Serj’s were a little different than what the mold of System became.”
The anticipation for System of a Down’s summer 2025 shows is palpable, with fans eagerly awaiting the chance to experience the band’s powerful live performances. As they prepare for this monumental tour, the possibility of new music continues to linger in the air, leaving fans hopeful for a future release that captures the essence of the band’s unique sound.
Stay tuned for more updates as System of a Down gears up for their highly anticipated summer tour and the potential for new music on the horizon.
