Exciting news for Super Mario fans as Shigeru Miyamoto, ahead of the latest Nintendo Direct, has shared an unexpected update on the upcoming Super Mario Bros. Movie. Miyamoto took to social media to reveal that the movie will be launching in Japan on April 24, 2026, aligning with the western release date.
Working closely with Illumination, the team behind the Despicable Me franchise, Miyamoto expressed his commitment to delivering another ‘fun movie’ for fans to enjoy. This update reassures fans that the movie is still on track for its anticipated release in 2026.
The announcement of the movie sequel was initially made during this year’s ‘MAR10 Day’ celebrations, confirming the release date in the west as April 3, 2026. Nintendo has hinted that the movie will once again delve into the beloved world of the Super Mario Bros. series.
Chris Meledandri from Illumination also disclosed that the original creative team from the first movie will be returning for the sequel. The first Super Mario Bros. Movie was a massive success, breaking records in the video game movie genre and crossing the $1 billion mark at the global box office.
Aside from the Mario Movie sequel, Miyamoto and Nintendo are also actively involved in the production of a live-action Zelda movie, expanding the cinematic universe of beloved Nintendo franchises.
