MenuESPN has recently announced the special honorees for The 2024 ESPYS Presented by Capital One, set to air on July 11 at 8 p.m. ET / PT on ABC. The event, hosted by Serena Williams, will recognize exceptional athletes and sports leaders for their courage, perseverance, and service with three prestigious awards.

Former NFL safety Steve Gleason is set to receive the Arthur Ashe Award for Courage for his remarkable battle against ALS. This award is bestowed upon individuals in the sports realm who have made a significant impact beyond the field by advocating for their beliefs and influencing people globally. Diagnosed with ALS in 2011, Gleason bravely confronted the incurable illness and founded Team Gleason, a nonprofit aimed at empowering ALS patients to lead purposeful lives through comprehensive programs and support services. His advocacy efforts led to the passage of “The Steve Gleason Act,” ensuring access to vital communication devices for ALS patients in the U.S. Gleason’s perseverance has also spurred technology companies like Microsoft to develop solutions for ALS patients worldwide. Prior to his diagnosis, Gleason enjoyed a successful NFL career, most notably remembered for his iconic punt block during the New Orleans Saints’ post-Hurricane Katrina game in the Louisiana Superdome.

University of South Carolina women’s basketball head coach Dawn Staley will be honored with the Jimmy V Award for Perseverance following her team’s undefeated 38-0 season and NCAA Women’s Basketball Championship victory. Staley, a U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame and Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame inductee, will be recognized not only for her on-court resilience and advocacy for women’s sports but also for her contributions to the fight against cancer. Staley has faced personal challenges with cancer, including the battles of her sister, Tracy Underwood, and a close friend.

Additionally, Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex, will be presented with The Pat Tillman Award for Service during The 2024 ESPYS. This award acknowledges individuals who have displayed remarkable commitment to serving others, embodying the spirit of the late NFL player and Army Ranger, Pat Tillman.
