Sony Removes Mention of 8K Support from PlayStation 5 Packaging, Sparking Discussions

Sony has made a significant change to the packaging of its PlayStation 5 console by removing any mention of 8K support. This move has sparked discussions among gamers and industry experts.

While retailers like Argos still display images of the PS5 Slim model with ‘8K’ prominently written on the side of the box, Sony’s official website no longer includes any reference to 8K support.

According to reports, this alteration has surprised many, especially considering Sony’s initial claims when the PlayStation 5 was first released in 2020. At that time, Sony had stated that the PS5 was compatible with 8K displays and would eventually be able to output resolutions up to 8K with supported software after a future system update.

However, the recent removal of 8K from the packaging has raised questions about Sony’s future plans. Speculations suggest that Sony might be reserving 8K support for a potential PlayStation 5 Pro model, rumored to launch later this year.

The discussion around 8K support for gaming consoles has been ongoing, with some experts expressing skepticism about the practicality and demand for 8K displays in the current market. Digital Foundry’s John Linneman commented on the situation, highlighting that native 8K gaming is still a rarity, with only a few titles like ‘The Touryst’ offering such high-resolution graphics.

‘So they apparently removed the 8K from the box on PS5s? Ha ha, that’s pretty funny and should have been done years ago,’ remarked John Linneman. ‘It’s pretty obvious that not only is 8K not suitable for these machines (aside from The Touryst) but 8K displays are not desirable. I wouldn’t want one.’

The Touryst, released in 2021, was noted as the first native 8K rendered game on the latest consoles, showcasing the potential of high-resolution gaming.

For more insights into the speculated PlayStation 5 Pro and its expected features, enthusiasts can explore Digital Foundry’s spec analysis feature on the topic. The anticipation surrounding a potential PlayStation 5 Pro launch has intrigued many in the gaming community.

As the gaming industry evolves and technology advances, the debate over 8K support in gaming consoles continues to be a topic of interest for gamers and industry analysts alike.
