Exciting news for all Shrek fans as the beloved green ogre is set to return to the big screen after 16 years. The original cast members, Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, and Cameron Diaz, are all confirmed to reprise their roles in the upcoming Shrek 5 film.
While the plotline for the movie has not been revealed yet, fans can expect Myers to voice Shrek, Diaz to play Princess Fiona, and Murphy to return as the lovable sidekick, Donkey. DreamWorks Animation announced the return of the iconic characters with a teaser stating, ‘Not too Far, Far Away… Shrek 5 is coming to theatres on July 1, 2026.’
The first Shrek film was a massive success when it was released in 2001, winning the first Oscar for Best Animated Feature Film. The franchise continued with Shrek 2 in 2004, Shrek The Third in 2007, and Shrek Forever After in 2010. Shrek 5 will mark the seventh installment in the series, including the spin-off films featuring Antonio Banderas’ character, Puss In Boots.
While it remains uncertain if Banderas will return for Shrek 5, Eddie Murphy hinted at the possibility of a Donkey spin-off movie in a recent interview. Murphy revealed that work on Shrek 5 has already begun, with production starting months ago. He expressed his excitement about the upcoming projects, stating, ‘Shrek is coming out and Donkey’s gonna have his own movie.’
