Seven Bikes Competing in Rally-Raids

Seven bikes to compete in – and maybe win – Rally-Raids

These bikes are not just a source of inspiration for the sandy African horizons; they are also closely related to the bikes that partake and triumph in the most prestigious Rally-Raids, such as the Dakar and the Africa Eco Race. The Maxienduro and Adventure bikes possess rally temperament in their DNA, while still excelling as road bikes suitable for everyday use, both in urban areas and off-road or on long journeys, with a few exceptions that are exclusively designed for rally use.

These bikes’ success can be attributed to their road suitability, accessible performance, and adaptability for off-road use. With minimal modifications, they can even be taken to a closed track for racing. While the Dakar and the Africa Eco Race have different regulations, bikes suitable for one may not fit the other. However, the classifications lose their significance when one of the bikes featured in this review is in our garage, ready to fuel our dreams or participate in the next rally.

Aprilia Tuareg 660

The 2021 Tuareg 660 is a benchmark in terms of handling and overall efficiency in the two-cylinder panorama. Aprilia has excelled with its Adventure, offering excellent performance on and off the road. The twin-cylinder engine produces 80 hp of power, and the bike weighs 204 kg in running order (187 kg dry), with a seat height of 860 mm.

Fantic Motor XEF 450 Rally

Fantic introduced the XEF Rally 450 in 2022, which was taken to the Dakar with Franco Picco. The bike is designed for racing, equipped with a 450 cc engine, a five-speed gearbox, and a frame based on a double-braced aluminum alloy structure. The ground clearance of the seat is 955 mm, and the weight in running order, with an empty gas tank, is less than 140 kg.
