Scott Ninnis Emerges as Top Choice for Adelaide 36ers Head Coach

Scott Ninnis is emerging as the top choice to continue as the head coach for the Adelaide 36ers in the upcoming 2024-25 NBL season, as reported by multiple sources to ESPN. Ninnis assumed the role of interim head coach on Dec. 6, following the departure of CJ Bruton. Under Ninnis’ leadership, the 36ers have achieved a 6-5 record, including an impressive 5-1 performance in the 2024 calendar year.

Although the 36ers have not officially extended an offer to Ninnis as of Thursday, there is mutual interest in his potential return for the next season. The 58-year-old coach has garnered attention for his successful stint, and the team is considering him as their top preference for the head coach position.

Currently, the 36ers hold the ninth position on the NBL ladder with a 10-14 record as they head into Round 18 of the 2023-24 season. Despite their standing, they still maintain a mathematical chance of qualifying for the play-in.

Notably, Ninnis and assistant coach Graham Kubank were present at the U20 National Championships in Ballarat, Victoria on Thursday, indicating their active involvement in scouting and talent assessment.

Prior to Ninnis’ potential appointment, the 36ers had expressed initial interest in Trevor Gleeson and internal discussions regarding the prospect of bringing in Brian Goorjian to fill the head coach position. However, Ninnis’ commendable performance during his interim role has elevated his status to the forefront of the 36ers’ considerations.

In other team developments, the 36ers recently secured the signing of Dejan Vasiljevic on a three-year deal. Additionally, players such as Nick Marshall, Sunday Dech, Jason Cadee, Jacob Wiley (mutual option), and Trentyn Flowers (Next Star) are already under contract for the 2024-25 season.

The 36ers’ upcoming game is scheduled against the Sydney Kings on Friday evening, adding anticipation to the team’s ongoing season.
