Santa Barbara Summer Solstice Celebration Approaches 50th Anniversary

Get ready to celebrate under the sun as the 50th anniversary of the Santa Barbara Summer Solstice event approaches, bringing with it a burst of energy and creativity. Thousands of enthusiasts are expected to flock to Santa Barbara to partake in one of the most vibrant and unique parades in the country.

The Summer Solstice Parade, born out of spontaneity fifty years ago by a small group, has evolved into a beloved Santa Barbara tradition. This event, devoid of logos and motorized vehicles, relies solely on human power and showcases the community’s boundless creativity and spirit.

Preparations for the parade are in full swing, with the theme ‘Flights of Fancy’ inspiring the floats and costumes. Artist Carlos Cuellar expressed the widespread adoration for the Solstice event, emphasizing the unity it brings among city dwellers and locals who gather to support the artists.

As the workshop buzzes with activity, participants eagerly anticipate the lively crowds and the physical demands of the performance, set against the backdrop of sunny 75-degree weather. Emma Jane Huerta, a long-time parade participant, highlighted the mix of pride and concentration required to navigate the parade route, spanning seven to eight blocks uphill.

The main event, the parade, is scheduled for Saturday, June 22 at noon, starting on Santa Barbara Street at Ortega Street and culminating in Alameda Park, where a three-day festival awaits. Anticipating a turnout of over 50,000 spectators, many will adorn costumes or painted faces to immerse themselves in the parade’s vibrant atmosphere.

Prior to the parade, Friday night will feature an evening music show with multiple bands, setting the stage for the weekend festivities. The celebration will conclude on Sunday with a finale at Alameda Park, featuring the KJEE – One Plant – Reggae in the Park show.

Don’t miss out on this jubilant occasion that promises to be a feast for the senses and a celebration of community spirit. Join the Summer Solstice Celebration in Santa Barbara for a weekend of art, music, and merriment!
