The world of luxury yachts is witnessing a groundbreaking development with the launch of the first superyacht to utilize methanol fuel. Sanlorenzo, the renowned Italian yard, unveiled the 164-foot steel superyacht named Almax, equipped with an innovative green methanol fuel cell system. This cutting-edge technology marks a significant milestone in the industry’s move towards sustainability and eco-friendliness.
Collaborating with Siemens Energy, Sanlorenzo’s revolutionary modular reformer fuel cell system converts biomethanol into hydrogen and then into clean electrical energy. This process eliminates the need for storing hydrogen onboard and can generate up to 100kW of power, all while keeping the engines and diesel generators switched off. The system is designed to cover approximately 90% of a superyacht’s typical usage time with zero emissions, setting a new standard for environmentally conscious maritime travel.
Not only does the 50Steel superyacht boast impressive eco-friendly credentials, but it also features innovative design elements that enhance the onboard living experience. One standout feature is the Hidden Engine Room (HER), a pioneering design that maximizes living space while maintaining the yacht’s sleek profile under 500 GT. By integrating the engine room into the lower deck, Sanlorenzo has created additional square footage for amenities like the Ocean Lounge, elevating the luxury experience for passengers.
Designed by Zuccon International Project and Piero Lissoni, the 50Steel exudes elegance and sophistication across its five decks. The interior spaces are characterized by clean lines, spacious salons, and luxurious accommodations. With a layout that includes four guest cabins and an owner’s suite, the yacht offers a perfect blend of comfort and style. Sanlorenzo’s art director has curated a refined aesthetic featuring elements like coffered ceilings and rich wood paneling, adding a touch of timeless luxury to the onboard ambiance.
From its sleek exterior to its opulent interiors, the 50Steel superyacht sets a new standard for sustainable luxury at sea. With its green methanol fuel system and innovative design features, this vessel represents a bold step towards a more environmentally conscious future for the yachting industry.
