The NFL owners’ meetings have been a hotbed of activity for the San Francisco 49ers, with general manager John Lynch addressing the media for the first time since the team’s flurry of March transactions. Among the key moves were the release of defensive lineman Arik Armstead and the addition of 10 outside free agents, sparking contract drama and an unexpected twist involving a fifth-round draft pick.
Speaking to local reporters for over 30 minutes, Lynch covered the team’s recent developments and provided insight into their plans for the upcoming NFL Draft in April.
1. Arik Armstead’s Departure
Lynch revealed that the 49ers made efforts to keep Arik Armstead, their longest-tenured player, but his hefty 2024 pay of over $18 million proved unsustainable for the team’s salary-cap situation, especially considering his recent injury history. Armstead ultimately signed a lucrative three-year deal with the Jacksonville Jaguars, prompting the 49ers to acquire defensive tackle Maliek Collins from the Houston Texans as a cost-effective replacement.
2. Brandon Aiyuk’s Contract
The 49ers are eyeing the approximately $10 million saved from Armstead’s departure to facilitate a contract extension for wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk. Aiyuk, currently under contract for 2024 at the fifth-year option rate of $14.1 million, is a prime candidate for a longer-term deal, with both parties showing interest in an extension.
