Rutgers Scarlet Knights Secure First Big Ten Victory of Season

Rutgers Scarlet Knights secured their first Big Ten victory of the season by defeating the visiting Indiana Hoosiers with a score of 66-57 in Piscataway, New Jersey. The game, which took place on January 9, 2024, showcased a strong performance from Rutgers players, with Mawot Mag leading the team with 13 points. The victory marked a significant achievement for Rutgers (9-6, 1-3 Big Ten) as they managed to limit Indiana to 11-for-33 shooting after halftime.

Alongside Mag, Aundre Hyatt contributed 12 points for the Scarlet Knights, while Jamichael Davis, Derek Simpson, and Austin Williams each chipped in 10 points. The team’s cohesive effort on the court allowed them to secure the much-needed win against the Hoosiers (11-5, 3-2).

Indiana’s Kel’el Ware recorded a double-double with 13 points and 17 rebounds, while Mackenzie Mgbako and Malik Reneau also scored 13 points each. However, Indiana struggled to maintain consistency throughout the game, allowing Rutgers to capitalize on their weaknesses.

Rutgers’ dominance was evident in the second half as they embarked on a 12-0 run, extending their lead to 13 points. Mawot Mag’s one-handed transition dunk further solidified their control over the game. The Scarlet Knights’ Clifford Omoruyi also played a pivotal role, grabbing 11 boards and contributing to the team’s 51-40 advantage under the glass.

Despite shooting at 32.3 percent as a team, Rutgers managed to outshine Indiana, who shot at 39.7 percent. The Hoosiers, who initially led by seven points in the first half, struggled to maintain their lead and eventually trailed for the last 20 minutes of the game.

The first half concluded dramatically as Derek Simpson’s buzzer-beating three-pointer from between the half-court line and the 3-point arc gave the Scarlet Knights a 30-27 lead. Although Indiana had a higher shooting percentage in the first half, their 11 turnovers and sloppy ball control contributed to a scoring drought late in the half, allowing Rutgers to gain momentum.

Rutgers’ victory against Indiana showcased their resilience and determination, highlighting their potential in the Big Ten conference. The team’s ability to capitalize on their opponents’ weaknesses and maintain composure under pressure secured a well-deserved win, marking a significant milestone in their season.
