Lincoln County, Kansas, a rural area located approximately 130 miles north of Wichita, with a population of just under 3,000 residents, is making a unique offer to attract remote workers and boost its local economy. The county is enticing new residents with a package that includes $4,500 in cash, a $500 credit towards high-speed internet, a gym membership, and a monthly supply of farm-fresh eggs. Additionally, participants have the opportunity to receive a complimentary plot of land to build their homes.
This initiative is part of a growing trend in low-population areas where mover incentive programs are being used to drive economic growth. Lincoln County’s program aims to recruit five new residents within a two-year period, as well as attract 70 households to the region.
To be eligible for the program, remote workers must be employed full-time, earn a minimum of $50,000 annually, currently reside outside of Kansas, and be able to relocate within six months of enrollment. Participants are required to commit to living in the area for at least one year.
Participants who have a spouse or partner who secures local employment can qualify for an additional $5,000 cash incentive. The original mover incentive program for Lincoln was launched in January 2023, with the goal of attracting five remote workers in the first year. Due to its success, the program has been expanded to attract a new wave of newcomers.
Lincoln County’s initiative is being supported by The Innovation Center, an organization that provides economic and entrepreneurial assistance. Since its inception, the program has garnered over 330 applications, with more than 35 applicants meeting the necessary criteria. The program is being promoted and overseen by Make My Move, a company based in Indianapolis that specializes in helping communities attract new residents.
