As the excitement builds for the upcoming 2024 TCS New York City Marathon, one runner stands out not only for his athleticism but for his incredible journey of resilience and determination. Ido Simyoni, a marathon participant, is set to inspire countless others as he prepares to cross the finish line after overcoming significant health challenges.
Ido’s battle began at the tender age of 14 when he was diagnosed with a rare bone tumor located in his forehead. Initially, it was believed that the tumor would cease to grow once he reached adulthood. However, at 26, Ido faced an unexpected setback as the tumor re-emerged, leading to a series of complex medical procedures.
Reflecting on his experiences, Ido shared, “I’m not supposed to grow anymore. I’m not a teenager anymore. Unfortunately, it grew back again.” This resurgence of the tumor necessitated a major surgical intervention last year, a procedure that left him uncertain about his future health. “They kind of like open it from ear to ear, opening all of it, and who knows what’s going to happen? Am I going to wake up? How am I going to wake up?” he recalled, highlighting the anxiety that accompanied the operation.
Ido’s previous surgery at the age of 17 had resulted in nerve damage, leaving him with limited mobility in his left hand. This time, he faced a challenging recovery that involved two additional surgeries to reconstruct his forehead using a metal plate, ensuring the tumor would not return. Upon waking from surgery, Ido was filled with a renewed sense of purpose. “I said to myself, next year I’m going to run all six in one year and I want to finish it in the TCS New York City Marathon, which is my city,” he stated, demonstrating his unwavering commitment to his goals.
The past year has presented Ido with some of his toughest challenges yet, not only due to the surgeries but also the emotional toll they took on him. Despite the physical suffering, he maintained a positive outlook. “While the body was suffering, the body was going through all of it. I kept my soul and in my spirit, high and positive as much as possible,” he explained. For Ido, crossing the finish line will symbolize a significant personal victory, a testament to his perseverance and strength.
His journey serves as a powerful reminder that belief in oneself can lead to extraordinary outcomes. Ido hopes that his story will inspire others facing their own battles. “When you believe in yourself and when you believe that you have that power, have that energy, have that thing in you, that driving you, that can help you get out of it, you’ll find it and you will. And here I am,” he affirmed, encouraging others to tap into their inner strength.
The 2024 TCS New York City Marathon is set to take place on Sunday, November 3, with coverage starting at 7:00 a.m. on Channel 7. The pre-race show will kick off the day’s festivities, followed by live marathon coverage beginning at 8:00 a.m. on Channel 7 and ESPN2.
