Roblox game developers have hit a new milestone, earning a record US$741 million last year. The popular video-game platform has seen a surge in earnings for developers, with Roblox paying out a staggering US$740.8 million to game creators in 2023, marking a 19% increase from the previous year.
Since its launch in 2006, Roblox has provided developers with tools to create millions of games for the platform, which can be accessed across various desktop and mobile devices. The platform’s digital currency, Robux, allows players to purchase in-game items, with developers receiving US$0.0035 for every Robux spent on their games.
Last year, nearly a hundred Roblox titles brought in over US$1 million in sales each, with nine generating at least US$10 million. Impressively, over 12,000 developers exchanged Robux for real-world currency, with 3,500 earning over US$10,000 and about 750 surpassing US$100,000 in earnings.
While Roblox initially saw games created by enterprising kids, the platform has evolved to attract professional game studios, with Los Angeles-based Gamefam Studios raising US$25 million in 2022 to develop Roblox games.
Roblox’s success is evident in its user base, with a record 68 million average daily active users generating US$3.5 billion in bookings last year. Despite a slight decrease in per-person spending compared to the peak of the pandemic, the platform’s top 10 games absorbed 30% of players’ time.
The surge in earnings for Roblox game developers highlights the platform’s growing prominence and the lucrative opportunities it presents for creators. With the continued success of Roblox, it’s clear that the platform will remain a key player in the gaming industry, attracting both developers and players alike.
