Rising Concern of Head and Neck Cancer in India

Head and neck cancer is a growing concern in India, with the incidence of cancer rising globally. The majority of cases are squamous cell cancer (SCC), while others include thyroid and salivary gland cancers, each requiring different treatment approaches.

In an interview with HT Lifestyle, Dr. Anil D’Cruz, Director Oncology at Apollo Cancer Centres, highlighted that SCC covers a vast region from below the brain to the collarbone, with various sub-sites prone to cancerous growths.

One of the leading causes of head and neck cancer in India is the widespread use of tobacco. Dr. D’Cruz pointed out that around one-third of the population aged 15 and above in India either use or are predisposed to using tobacco, with over 50% opting for smokeless products and 30 to 40% choosing to smoke. Any form of tobacco consumption significantly raises the risk of developing head and neck cancer.

Individuals who both consume tobacco and alcohol face an even higher risk. The combination of these habits greatly increases susceptibility to head and neck cancers, emphasizing the importance of addressing these behaviors.
