Riot Games Announces Major Reset for League of Legends MMO Development

Riot Games, the developer behind the popular game League of Legends, has announced a major shift in the development of its highly anticipated MMO set in the League of Legends universe. The company revealed that the project will be ‘resetting’ and moving in a new direction, effectively putting the game on hold for potentially several years.

According to Riot cofounder and chief product officer Marc Merrill, the decision to reset the development of the League of Legends MMO stems from the realization that the initial vision for the game wasn’t different enough from existing titles in the genre. Merrill stated, ‘We don’t believe you all want an MMO that you’ve played before with a Runeterra coat of paint; to truly do justice to the potential of Runeterra and to meet the incredibly high expectations of players around the world, we need to do something that truly feels like a significant evolution of the genre.’

As part of this reset, Fabrice Condominas, a veteran with experience at EA and BioWare, will be taking over as the new executive producer for the project. Meanwhile, former executive producer Vijay Thakkar will transition to a new role as technical director.

This announcement represents a significant delay for the highly anticipated MMO, with the development window being pushed back significantly. The decision reflects Riot’s commitment to delivering a truly innovative and groundbreaking experience within the MMO genre, rather than simply offering a familiar MMO with a League of Legends theme.

While this news may disappoint fans eagerly awaiting the League of Legends MMO, it underscores Riot’s dedication to delivering a game that breaks away from the traditional MMO mold and offers a fresh and innovative experience for players.

For now, fans of the League of Legends universe may have to content themselves with the base MOBA game, but Riot’s decision to reset the MMO’s development suggests that the company is committed to delivering a game that will exceed expectations and set new standards within the MMO genre.
