Residents in Holmfield, Bradford, are raising concerns over a proposed battery energy storage site development in their area. The company Masdar Arlington has conducted consultations for the site near an industrial estate on Holdsworth Road, sparking worries about safety, noise, and loss of green space among the residents.
Despite no formal planning application submitted to Calderdale Council yet, over 250 individuals have signed a petition against the project. The site’s proximity to Holdsworth House, a renowned hotel, and filming locations has added to the apprehension among locals.
Residents have expressed fears about potential health impacts, including exacerbation of the mysterious ‘Holmfield hum’ noise that has been troubling the area. Concerns about the site’s closeness to schools and homes, as well as the impact on the surrounding greenery, have also been highlighted.
The proposed battery storage site aims to store 500MW of power and provide electricity to the National Grid during peak energy demand periods, supporting the UK’s Net Zero targets. The company plans to submit a formal planning application by the year-end, emphasizing the site’s role in promoting renewable energy generation and aiding in achieving net zero emissions.
However, residents remain unconvinced, citing fire risks, safety concerns, and the potential disruption to their community. They are actively voicing their opposition through social media, local representatives, and an online petition on change.org.
As the debate continues, the clash between the company’s renewable energy goals and the residents’ concerns over safety and environmental impact remains unresolved.
