In a significant announcement for cycling enthusiasts, Remco Evenepoel, the newly crowned Olympic Time Trial Champion and recent podium finisher at the Tour de France, is set to participate in some of the most prestigious cycling events in 2025. This revelation comes from Soudal-QuickStep team manager, Patrick Lefevere, during an in-depth interview with Dernière Heure.
Evenepoel, who has garnered attention for his remarkable performances, will be making his debut in both the Milan-Sanremo and the Tour of Flanders in 2025. This marks a notable shift from his 2024 season, where he only competed in a single one-day race, the Figuiera Champions Classic, which he won decisively with a long solo break.
As part of his preparations for the upcoming season, the 24-year-old Belgian cyclist is expected to have a Classics-heavy schedule in the first half of 2025. Lefevere confirmed that in addition to competing in the Tour of Flanders, Evenepoel will also participate in another Flemish cobbled Classic to gear up for De Ronde. The options for this preparatory race include either Dwars door Vlaanderen or E3 Harelbeke.
Evenepoel’s return to Liège-Bastogne-Liège is also on the agenda. The cyclist previously achieved back-to-back victories in this challenging race in 2022 and 2023. However, he had to forgo the 2024 edition due to a crash that resulted in a broken collarbone during the Itzulia Basque Country event earlier that April.
Lefevere mentioned, “I confirm what I told you after this year’s Spring Classics, the idea is that Remco discovers Milan-Sanremo and the Tour de France.” He further elaborated that Evenepoel would also participate in either Paris-Nice or Tirreno-Adriatico as part of his preparation for the season.
In addition to these major races, Lefevere also confirmed Evenepoel’s plans to return to the Tour de France. The cyclist had a remarkable debut in the 2024 edition, finishing third overall and clinching a stage victory, along with the overall win in the Best Young Riders classification. However, any potential return to the Giro d’Italia in 2025 seems unlikely, as Evenepoel had previously raced in this event in 2021 and 2023.
While Evenepoel has had a brief experience in the Belgian cobbled Spring Classics during his debut pro season in 2019, competing in Nokere Koerse and the Bredene Koksidje Classic, he has yet to ride any of the Flemish one-day events. This upcoming season will provide him with a fresh opportunity to showcase his talents in these historic races.
