Regina King and Reina King bring Shirley Chisholm’s remarkable story to the screen in new Netflix film ‘Shirley’

Regina King and her sister, Reina King, are bringing the remarkable story of Shirley Chisholm to the screen in their new Netflix film ‘Shirley.’ Chisholm, a trailblazing figure, made history as the first Black woman elected to Congress in 1968 and later co-founded the Congressional Black Caucus. In 1972, she boldly sought the Democratic nomination for president, marking a pivotal moment in American politics.

Despite her groundbreaking achievements, Chisholm’s legacy remains largely unrecognized, prompting Regina and Reina King to embark on a 15-year journey to produce ‘Shirley’ through their company, Royal Ties Productions. Their passion for sharing Chisholm’s story stems from a desire to elevate her significance, particularly within the Black community.

Regina King, who also stars as Chisholm in the film, emphasizes the importance of shedding light on Chisholm’s impactful contributions, citing the lack of awareness about her among both Black and white audiences. The King sisters enlisted the talents of Oscar winner John Ridley to write and direct the film, marking a significant collaboration that further underscores the significance of Chisholm’s narrative.

‘Shirley’ delves into the intimate aspects of Chisholm’s life, offering a portrayal that focuses on her inner circle and the dynamics at play as she pursued the presidency. With a keen focus on her political mentor, the film presents a compelling narrative that sheds light on Chisholm’s resilience and strategic acumen.

Through ‘Shirley,’ Regina and Reina King aim to honor the enduring legacy of Shirley Chisholm, whose trailblazing spirit continues to resonate with audiences today. The film serves as a poignant reminder of Chisholm’s indelible impact on American politics, offering a timely reflection on her pioneering efforts and the relevance of her story in the context of contemporary societal and political landscapes.
