A recent recall has been issued for canned coffee products due to fears of a deadly toxin. Snapchill LLC, a Wisconsin-based coffee manufacturer, voluntarily recalled all its canned coffee products within the expiration date after federal officials warned of potential botulinum toxin production during the production process. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) posted a warning notice regarding the issue.
The recalled products were distributed nationwide through various roasters, retailers, and Snapchill’s website. The recall was initiated as the FDA notified Snapchill that the low-acid canned foods process used for manufacturing the products was not filed with the FDA, as required by regulations.
Botulism, a severe form of food poisoning, can result from consuming contaminated food. Symptoms include general weakness, dizziness, double vision, difficulty speaking or swallowing, breathing problems, muscle weakness, abdominal swelling, and constipation. These symptoms can appear within hours to two weeks after consuming the contaminated food.
While no illnesses have been reported to date, Snapchill is proactively working on filing the necessary notification with the FDA. Consumers are advised to either dispose of the recalled products or return them to Snapchill or the place of purchase for a refund.
The recalled products, sold under various roaster and brand names, come in metal cans ranging from 7 ounces to 12 ounces. They are labeled with ‘Produced and distributed by Snapchill LLC’ beneath the nutrition facts panel and may also feature the text ‘Snapchill Coffee.’
