Raspberry Pi RP2040 Spotted in Super Tiny Unofficial Game Boy Handheld

Super small retro gaming just got smaller. Maker Elliot Coll shared a super small Game Boy handheld featuring a Raspberry Pi RP2040 microprocessor. The handheld, found on Aliexpress for around $85 (USD), comes with minimal instructions and features a custom PCB housing the RP2040. It sports a D-pad, A, B, Start, and Select buttons.

The RP2040, capable of reaching up to 133 MHz, is a significant upgrade from the original Game Boy processor, the Sharp LR35902, which could reach up to 4.19MHz. The handheld uses a microSD card slot as a cartridge slot for loading ROMs and operates on a LiPo battery.

While the exact operating system or firmware is unknown, the handheld appears to have Chinese text in its menu options. Coll had to figure out the input options and navigation through trial and error. Despite its small size, the unit functions well as a retro gaming handheld, although Coll encountered difficulty due to the tiny screen.
