Rabid coyote euthanized after attacking women in Maryland

A coyote that attacked two women in Montgomery County, Maryland, has been euthanized after testing positive for rabies. The first attack occurred near Patuxent Drive and Lost Creek Drive in Ashton, where a woman suffered bites to her arms and legs. The second attack took place near Bell Road in Burtonsville, where a woman was bitten but managed to fight off the coyote and stab it. The Montgomery County Office of Animal Services reported that the captured coyote had wounds consistent with being fought off by the second victim.

Experts emphasized that such attacks are extremely rare, as coyotes typically avoid humans. They explained that the current mating season may be contributing to the unusual behavior, with some coyotes protecting their pups in dens. Residents are advised to ensure their pets’ rabies shots are up to date and to contact a doctor if they may have had contact with the rabid coyote.

The incidents serve as a reminder of the importance of maintaining awareness and taking necessary precautions when encountering wildlife in residential areas. Stay informed about local news and events to ensure the safety of both humans and animals in the community.
