Purdue football is facing another setback as the team navigates a challenging final week of the season. In a surprising turn of events, Fort Wayne linebacker Kimar Nelson has decommitted from the Boilermakers, marking a significant shift in the team’s recruitment strategy.
Nelson initially committed to Purdue after being impressed by the program during his visit while the team played against Northwestern on November 2. However, just three weeks later, he announced on his social media platform, X, that he was reopening his recruitment. In his post, Nelson expressed gratitude towards Coach Walters and the Purdue coaching staff for their belief in his potential, stating, “I am deeply appreciative of Coach Walters and the entire Purdue staff for believing in me and offering me an incredible opportunity.” He emphasized that the decision was not an easy one but felt it was essential for him to thoroughly evaluate his options.
In his announcement, Nelson highlighted the importance of making a confident decision regarding his future, aiming to avoid any regrets when he officially signs his National Letter of Intent (NLI) on National Signing Day in February 2025. This decision comes on the heels of a recent visit to North Carolina State, where he received a scholarship offer. Interestingly, his announcement about reopening his recruitment closely followed a post indicating he had also been offered by Cal.
Nelson is not the only recruit to part ways with Purdue recently. He joins linebacker Grant Beerman, who has committed to Illinois, and offensive lineman Kuol Kuol, who is heading to Iowa State. This marks the third decommitment from Purdue’s 2025 recruiting class in just two days, raising concerns about the program’s future recruitment efforts.
Since mid-October, Purdue has seen a total of eight verbal commitments for its 2025 class decommit. As the Boilermakers prepare for their upcoming game against Indiana, they are currently on a 10-game losing streak, leaving the future of the program in a state of uncertainty.
At present, Purdue has nine known commitments for its 2025 recruiting class, with the early signing period set to commence on December 4. The team will need to strategize effectively to rebuild its class and regain momentum as they move forward.
As the Boilermakers navigate these recruiting challenges, fans and analysts alike will be watching closely to see how the coaching staff adapts and what new prospects may emerge in the coming weeks.
